Cooking with the seasons

Cooking with the seasons is at the heart of how I live and eat.

The ebb and flow of the seasons shapes what ends up on our table, from the first tender greens in spring to the harvests of late summer and the comfort of winter stews. I source what I can from my garden and from nearby growers, bringing home produce that is fresh, simple, and full of flavour.

Seasonal cooking also means celebrating abundance and making it last. When berries are plentiful, I turn them into jam or tuck some into the freezer for cooler months. When the garden gives more cucumbers than we can eat, I pickle them for later. These small rituals of harvesting, preserving, and storing keep me connected to the land and to the people who grow our food.

Cooking this way also matters for the planet. Choosing what grows locally and in season supports farmers close to home, reduces food miles, and helps care for the land that sustains us.

For me, seasonal cooking is a slower, more intentional way of living. It brings joy and balance, with meals that reflect the turn of the seasons outside and the season of life within.

About Samira.

Welcome to my kitchen notebook, here I share stories from my garden, recipes, and photography.

Much of what I cook is shaped by my roots, the years I spent living abroad, and the life I have built here in Western Australia.

My farm in Pemberton is at the heart of it all. From the veggie patch outside the kitchen window to the tall trees that frame the paddocks, the turn of the seasons guides what I cook. I love drawing on what is grown close to home, whether it is the first herbs from my own garden or the cheese I buy from the local farm.

I like to keep my cooking simple and accessible, using ingredients you can find in local markets and supermarkets.

Each recipe carries a story. Some are rooted in childhood memories, others in the new traditions I have created with my family here in Australia. There are everyday meals and there are dishes for gathering and celebrating, but all are meant to be shared around the table.

I hope you will join me in this journey of cooking through the seasons.

Feel free to reach out with a message or a comment, I would love to hear from you.

Happy cooking and feasting,
Samira xo
